Kia has a 1.1L 3-cyl turbodiesel available for the Picanto, and considering that its engine bay is so small that engine might be a good option for a motorcycle. Anyway, considering that Triumph makes a 3-cyl 2300cc engine for the Rocket III, a 1.4L or 1.5L 3-cyl turbodiesel doesn't seem totally unsuitable for motorcycles...

Anything above 1.0L is rather heavy for a motorcycle if we want to keep total weight around 400 lbs. Vibration is minimized with a 3 cylinder engine. Engine choices many be influenced by local dealer support for industrial equipment.

There are some Yanmar TNV engines that would meet those requirements. Relatively cheap, and with plenty of dealer support since they're widely used in refrigeration equipments.
