I would go with a simple water injection system. Run it with the best spray pattern in the intake pointing to the engine. Since it is an IDI and no turbo you could use the RPM to set the injection rate.

I'm going to have to retract that offer. A friend was bemoaning having to keep his VW shop open, and I offer my 1958 Baja, the Lexus drivetrain and misc., if he wants to try an EV conversion business.

If your diesel is non-turbo then put a turbo on it.
Minimum 10% fuel economy improvement, more power, better drivability, less soot.
The only bad things about a turbo is cost and it may increase NOx a little, but mostly at full power.

I'd suspect that if I made this thing as a constant power pusher trailer running at part throttle then using a specifically calibrated turbo to run boost at that part throttle/lower RPMs along with a good intercooler would possibly decrease NOx along with soot, CO and HC emissions.
I wonder how much it would cost to get a custom miller cycle camshaft... I could use a turbo to do it too since all I need is something that puts out constant power at a constant throttle level within a narrow RPM range (55 to 65mph)

A good intercooler also wouldn't over cool the air in the winter.

What would be a good inlet temperature? We get down to -30* quite regularly in the winter.

Such an "overcool" doesn't really seem to be a matter of concern at all, not even in the winter.
