Also, I collected a couple IR2130s and a few 100 amp 6pack IGBTs. I'm pretty close to actually getting started here.

Dave,

If you're interested I found this thread for a DIY Gauss meter at:

Inexpensive magnetic flux (gauss) meter - RC Groups

It is an interesting read and in places laugh-out-loud funny.

lol, yah i did some hall experiments too recently, basically the field strength is a function of the distance to the magnet when this guy turns off:

it is a low gauss unipolar, though latching sounds like a better choice for position sensing generally. I have a large radius "magnet wheel" with strong magnets and should be able to get the sensor close so there doesn't seem to be an appreciable difference between the ON time and the OFF time with the unipolar in this instance though.

I spent a lot of time examining magnetic patterns on refrigerator magnets and etc with it

some more hall fun:

Dave,

What voltage and IGBTs are you planning to use? I haven't found a BLDC schematic using IGBTs. From what I've seen so far, suitable IGBTs are too costly in the catalogs and I'm leery of buying on EBay.
