DIY Raspberry Pi cell phone. But why?

So, some guy wants us to believe that he dislikes that cell phones cannot use full-sized USB cables and "GPIO pins," so he decided to make his own phone that have both of those features, but little else, like a camera, and not only is this the largest cell phone that I have seen in decades, but it has the worst screen-to-body ratio that I have ever seen in a cell phone:

But why?

Why do people climb mountains?

I can understand at least part of this. I've never quite understood why cell phones need to have cameras, or why they don't (currently) have decent keyboards for sending texts.

Maybe 'cuz a real TELEPHONE only has three active parts: the input microphone, the output speaker, and the rotating dialer.
