Those aftermarket ECMs are usually good options to overcome the limitations of a stock ECM in an ecomodding project. And they're not so expensive at all, and some have an easy tuning interface.

I don't want to mess with those systems since it isn't perfectly legal to do that and all of this will be going into a report.

Reprogramming the ECM or replacing it with an aftermarket one such as a Megasquirt is not illegal, not even in California.
