What's your vehicle capable of?

Just for fun i did a test with my car to see if the roads were empty, no lights or stop signs, what would be my best MPG be if i decided where and when to stop. We all know we gain the most from coasting so if you start from a dead stop (on a flat road) and stop anywhere else shortly after what MPG do you get?

I got 68 mpg accelerating to about 25mpg and coasting down in neutral with engine on. the faster i went the worse mpg i got on other attempts.

I've got a 2001 Chrysler T&C with a massive 3.8l that get's 84 coasting down hill in neutral and I am always impressed with how well and how far it coasts. Seems to roll so smooth for such a large vehicle. If I watch the MPG gauge and drive with bare feet I can coax 43 on flat roads. But with all that the average is 24.7mpg all time but wife likes to idle all the time with the A/C on.

Sorry i wasn't clear. I was looking for the average MPG for the short trip from start to stop. The instang MPG you were talking about is going to be much higher than the average

It can be any distance but I don't think there is a point making it long, it just has to be on a flat road. My test was very short, I think i covered about half a mile or so. I think every vehicle will get the best average MPG accelerating from a dead stop to about 25mph and coasting down. For those turning off the engine will probably get around 100 mpg

My best commute was 103 mpg. I think there's another 5-10 mpg available in ideal conditions. (no traffic, no lights, no hard turns to slow down for)

Your best will not be from a dead stop. Starting from 5 mph and coasting down to 5 will be better. You have to idle a moment and slip the clutch to get moving, which is inefficient.

With the Insight, on a flat road and 100F day, with no wind, and using repetitive P&G, the car with max out at 150 mpg, for as long as you care to drive it that way.

P&G speeds are 35 mph max, down to 20 mph. Rinse and repeat.

The mileage will immediately drop below this value upon attempting to crest any hills in the area however.

115 mpg and above / under 2L/100km
when idling in 4th gear, fully warmed up
doing about 20mph, no P&G
dead-flat terrain or it won't work

a bit worse when starting from standstill

Yes but what i was trying to see is what is the best tank (fill) i can get. We all start somewhere and then stop so that's why i tested it from a dead stop to a dead stop.
