Driving for the hell of it!

Took the Polo out for a fun run this afternoon- most impressed by it- it goes a lot better than the 64bhp would suggest!

Nice to get out for a drive just for the hell of it once in a while- much better than the plodding to and fro work..

Going for a drive is always nice. My girlfriend and I go for drives regularly. We wound up heading out to coastal Washington state last week just to enjoy the weather. Just curious.. do you practice hypermiling techniques while on leisure drives? I do, drives my girlfriend nuts when I pulse and glide on rural highways...

Yeah its nice to realise you dont need a good car to have a great drive-sometimes the road is enough!

As for techniques-the roads are pretty much inbuilt p&g, and the wee polo does well with engine braking and momentum consevation.

I definitely have to second this. Exploring by car is fun, no matter what car (some are just more fun than others).

Worryingly, the good weather has continued all week, and I'm getting twitchy wheels again...

Need to console myself with the beer festival on sat and continuing to get fit via the supercheap hybrid bike in the shed

My favourite pleasure drive is along the Columbia river highway. It's seldom used and surrounded by greenery. Also there's quite a few waterfalls along the way that make for good hiking. Some of the views are unbeatable. I always seem to manage in the high 40s mpg-wise on that drive, compared to the usual 32 or so.

Best of both worlds!

The tank I used for this trip finished up at 51.39 imp mpg-most pleasing!

40 years ago I drove 1000 miles a week in a 10mpg 67 383 Formula S Barracuda, for 13 weeks, then I sold it, paid $1400. I was making $13.5k a year and that 100 weekly gallons of gas cost me $32.99.

Today, it would cost me $50 in my new car.

I still joy ride on occasion, but I prefer to have at least one good reason. Back then it was the drive.
