It's a redistribution of wealth -- from the folks who pay tons of interest on perpetual large balances, to those determined to play the game and come out ahead.

Redistribution of wealth is a bit of a stretch... we all have a choice to use the plastic and we all have a choice on how to use it. I used to be one who carried a good sized balance and one day decided to end the cycle by delivering newspapers with my wife on weekends for a few years as extra income to pay them off. It was a bit of a burden, but I've been debt free from the plastic for close to 18 years.

I didn't say it was an involuntary one.

Redistribution? Yeah, the wealth was getting redistributed to the financial services industry. Business as usual, in other words.

Credit card companies charge a fee and a percentage of every transaction. Remember when gas stations had a cash price and a credit price? The bank lobby made that illegal so cash customers had to pay the higher price. Stores put up with it because they want people to spend money and roll the fees into the retail price so they don't lose. Stores do want to keep them to a minimum- you've seen places that won't take American Express? It's because they take a bigger cut than the others.

I'd forgotten. Do you have a citation?

Pipelining all consumer spending through this 'voluntary tax' is like Zuckerberg's Panopticon becoming the basis of global governance. As he has proposed.

I am reminded every time I leave home . Most western States still do this. It gets even more confusing when you enter Oregon with 3 prices for diesle cash ,card(charge or atm ) PUC( for Comercial traffic pays a monthly/ annual road use tax instead of at the pump).

When I worked at U-Haul the 24' Ford moving truck would forcibly lift your foot /gas pedal at 60-65mph depending on the truck. No mater how hard you pushed it would push backon down slopes it would force compression braking.
The down side is you can't ecobomb in grade territory. No building speed to make the next hill. In the Serra Nevadas you'll be pulling the next hill7-14% grades several miles long in 2nd gear at 35-40mph.
Sounds like your in the flat lands so this feedback system may work for you
