Us & Canadia only offer the identical 1.4 turbo
I wish I could get a 1.8 or 1.4 NA but the Mexican version is even less similar

Brazil only got the naturally-aspirated 1.8L prior to the facelift, and the manual was very rare, while the facelifted model got the turbocharged 1.4L automatic only. Argentina and Uruguay OTOH retained the naturally-aspirated 1.8L and at least one version with the manual. Odd enough, the 4WD option was available there and never in Brazil. The first batches came from Korea, and shortly after the Brazilian market started getting the Mexican model.

And what drives consumer demand? Advertisng. This might do better:
That's not a pickup, it's a Corolla sedan with an open trunk. Muh 4x8 sheet of plywood?
(is that a Pinto-style gas tank)

Nope not a pinto style, but stole the engineering. Tanks have been plastic for maybe 30 years, got one in the F250 from '00, all the schoolbusses I drove had them, but might be a diesel fuel thing.
No utility from the bed either unless you can drive around open hatched. Freebeard should remember the brat with it's micro bed, good for only one medium sized cardboard box. Good for grocery bags, or a big bag of hardware store stuff but that's it. Sheet of plywood? fugettaboutit

I saw this one in a grocery store parking lot in 2016:

...so it was a 'grocery-getter'.
