Earth911.com, great recycling site

I just discovered this website Earth911.com - Find Recycling Centers and Learn How To Recycle. It's seems like a great way to find locations near you to recycle all kinds of materials. Not just easy ones like paper, glass, or plastic. But weird materials that I didn't even know could be recycled: paint thinners, pesticides, cds and dvds, mattresses, and a lot more.

It is great to have a site that will list recyclers in your area. Just a comment, call any of the companies listed before you go as most of them charge for taking the items.

And in this area, a lot of the "free household hazardous waste disposal days" seem to keep getting cancelled or are not publicised very well and have about a two hour duration.

I have been holding on to four smoke detectors for two years now and have been advised by city, county and state employees to "just throw them away". True, this is completely legal and the amount of Americium 241 is very small but if several million per year go in to landfills it adds up. Best offer so far is $15 to take the detectors. Kidde, the company that currently owns Firex claims on their web site they no longer take them back.

So good luck with the haz waste disposal and in spite of my negative vibes, keep trying
