Economics of a used Nissan Leaf?
How long might a battery last, and how soon might it be undriveable? Let's say a used Leaf can be bought for $4000 and it has a 40-mile range. Will it likely be usable for four years?

If it has a 40 mile range in the summer, it has a 20 mile range in the winter.
You don't want to be sweating bullets when it's -10 outside wondering if you can make it home.
That said, if your use case is always ~20 miles round trip, and you're ok with that, then it might get you a few years.
I'd spend extra to get a used Spark or Bolt.

Range isn't that accurate an indicator of battery health. With the same car one person may go 80 miles and another only 40 with the same battery depending on their climate, route, and driving habits. For example - when I bought my Bolt somehow the previous owner had only averaged 1.4 miles / kWh over the first 30,000 miles of ownership. I have averaged 4.0 mi/kWh over the 21,000 miles I have owned it)
You need to check the remaining capacity of the battery. A crude way of doing that is charging it fully and seeing how many bars remain on the gauge. Much more info can be obtained with a cheap OBDII dongle and a free app. This link should have the info you need

Battery definitely needs to be from July 2013 or later And not from Arizona or another hotbox.
Sometimes you hit the lottery with a 2011 that has a 2020 battery but it’s rare.
