Nissan confirms next-gen Leaf will have over 200-mile range

Nissan confirms next-gen Leaf will have over 200-mile range

Quote:
Today, we finally got confirmation that the next-gen Leaf will indeed have a 60-kWh pack. Kazuo Yajima, Nissan's global director of EV and HEV engineering, told AutoblogGreen that "It's coming," referring to a 60-kWh Leaf. "I'm sorry I cannot say when," he said.

...

"In the near future, I believe, we can produce an electric vehicle that doesn't have any driving range problem," he said.
Very cool stuff. The current Leaf has a 24 or 30 kWh battery. It started out with the 24 and recently added an option to go to a 30 kWh.

Let's hope this helps drop prices on used cells. One day I'm going to need a pack rebuild, and I'd love to go lithium.

A bit more information is here:

http://www.autonews.com/article/2015...pite-low-sales

It says "close to 300 mile range".

Quote:
Officially, Nissan has barely acknowledged that there will be a second-generation Leaf, let alone revealed specifics about the product, which likely will appear in the 2018-20 time frame.

But engineers in Atsugi freely show the work they are doing on a future EV that fits into the Leaf's footprint.

The team is in the late stages of a perfecting a 60 kilowatt-hour lithium ion vehicle battery that has the same dimensions as the 30 kWh battery just introduced on the 2016 Leaf. The 30 kWh battery is an enhancement from last year's 24 kWh battery.

The 60 kWh battery has graduated from r&d last year to running in prototypes today.

Teams also have targeted aerodynamics in a big way for the next EV. Engineers at Atsugi note that even a small improvement in aerodynamic design goes a long way on a battery-powered vehicle. Power escapes from all vehicles in different ways. Internal combustion engines lose energy in the form of heat. Friction in wheels, axles and transmissions sap the efficiency of a car's powertrain.

250% as much energy storage in the same footprint?!

I also like they are paying attention to aerodynamics! What would we ecomodders have left to do?!

I do think the 2018-2020 time frame part is way off, though. At least I hope it comes out much sooner than that.

New leaf concept looks cool...

OTOH, the original design concept for the first gen Leaf:

Which became this concept car:

And finally devolved into this turd (as much as I like the leaf, it's fugly, imo):

The real question is; 200 mile range for how long?

I was considering one back in the day, but I think I'll stick with my 700 mile range
