So, with the new Honda IMMD system, there is a fixed gear. This means that at highway speeds, the engine is not always operating in the sweetspot!

According to this presentation, the hybrid system will charge batteries when there is leftover power from internal combustion engine (ICE)

Perhaps at highway speeds, the fixed gear could be connected (good mechanical transfer) the engine be kept at optimum load (recharging batteries if there is excess), and then once batteries are charged, disconnect the clutch and shut the engine down (reducing pumping losses) and run under EV power, for a little while.
