Engine Braking

It is a myth that automatic transmissions "free wheel" when engine braking. They are always coupled to the engine, albeit less than a manual transmission would be.

This is misleading.
Nearly all car automatics, since the Buick Dynaflow, use an over running clutch for free wheeling during coasting in the "drive" gear. It is bypassed in lower gears so you do get engine braking in "L" or numbered gears.
