One of the reasons 4 cylinder otto cycle is desirable is the harmonics of induction and exhaust, IE the intake pulses and exhaust pulses are fairly easy to maintain a relatively smooth air flow on intake and exhaust. 2 cylinder 2 stroke would be close to the same with half the cylinders and the same number of combustion strokes.I'm not talking about the traditional 2 stroke, but the more modern fuel injected 2 strokes than do not need oil mixed in the fuel.

...wasn't one of Detroits' "...Big-3..." working on a 2-stoke for cars awhile back?

GM and Chrysler were; dunno about Ford. Orbital Company's 2-stroke tech was all the rage in the '90s before it failed to produce.

Frank I think you might see the orbital design in outboards. Fitch or something like that.

There were all kinds of industries looking at/evaluating/licensing Orbital tech back then. Automotive looked at it too but as we can see it hasn't panned out.

Apparently they discarded the orbital design and replaced with DI and oil injection. Interesting that the 2 stroke is lower emissions than the other 4 stroke outboards.

2 stroke car engines were used up till about 1990 in some parts of the world.
