More than halving your interior heating power need.

Hi,

I have been driving my ID3 58kwh model now over 11000km. In winter times the heating really beats the mileage. In summer heat pump uses 2 kwh but on winter easily 4 kwh or more. That just sucks. I will do something to solve this problem. Most of the cold comes from windows. You could swap all windows to acrylic, but that takes lot a time and taking doors open in this car is not easy task.

Other option would be to put plastic films on all windows which would help little maybe 20% or so.

But lately I figured even better and more effective way to solve this problem.

At the moment I almost always need only the front seats. So all rear windows are cooling the cabin without any sense.

I will build a wall from about 60mm think semi hard mattress. To see back I will cut there a opening and put between the mattress 3mm acryl window there.

This will more than half the heated interior volume and more than half the cold window surface area. I am betting I can see a difference in real life driving.

This would also create real two zone climate inside the car as I can control the temperatures little bit separately through the leg heating function.

Been there and done that with my 1961 Type II panel van. It came with a partition behind the seat.

With the partition in place (I removed the glass window for a pass-through) the anemic heater only had to deal with a volume about the size of a phone booth. Worked for hot-boxing as well.

Just get a diesel fired camper/rv heater and be done with it. You will stay nice and toasty with no range loss for running the heater.

Why mattress and not rigid foam board? I used 1" extruded polystyrene to build window blocks for cold-weather camping that ended up working really well. R-5 per inch, I believe. You could use 2" for a partition or even double it up.

A tonneau cover behind the seats and a curved piece of acrylic to leave a package shelf behind the seats. Mimic the GTI W12 650 inside the stock body shell.

Mattress is little bit more gentle for the oem interior. Harder foam migth leave permanent dents to interior upholstery. I want the shield be tigth as possible to body panels. Mean it should push against car upholstery.

Specially the roofliner is tricky to get pushmarks

1. Plug in a small space heater to heat cabin (wether grid ties or solar powered)

2. Invest in heated clothing, they have jackets and such that have heating grids in them that plug into a portable battery pack meant for topping off cell phones and tablets.

I have now been running two weeks with the acrylic wall in place and done two tests. Sadly in both tests the wall did not create any energy savings. First test was with driving 100km/h and other idle energy consumption test drove under 1 km and after that stopped and idled for 13 minutes still with heating on. In this the results got lower on each test. Did 5 runs so almost 1.5 hours of testing.

Results varied in both tests a lot so at the moment I dont know how I should perform the tests to get steady results. Will remove the wall.

Hello Vekke!
I think your MPG is suffering the global effects of the extreme cold. Here in the US we also have winter fuel, which is less dense and therefore provides less BTU/gallon. That whacks the MPG too.

Have you measured a temperature drop in the rear? All my stuff has heat vents that would need to be blocked off including the rear window and under the front seats.
