Europe vs US?

My 2 cents. At least three things are at work here that give the UK numbers an advantage.
First, the mileage estimates in the UK are calculated using Imperial gallons, so they are already starting off with an advantage. Second, many of the vehicles with those super high numbers are diesels. Some are tiny & most are turbo. Third, the MPG numbers are WAY overly exaggerted. A quick look at Fuelly doesn't show me a staggering MPG difference with UK based vehicles. The numbers they come up with actually make the EPA look legitimate. (scary thought) |
Rather than blaming the government, How about doing a survey? Ask people on the street what they think about it.
If there is a mass of people asking for cars that get 100 MPG they get it because there is no sale otherwise. The thing is, Are they asking? |

I agree that the Feds keep some nice vehicles out, like keis and some diesels and of course Honda SuperCubs. |
That Nissan starts at 24.5k Euro. What's that in USD? (over 33k)
That is a diesel. Does Nissan offer us any diesels in the US? (No) The US version (Rogue) is 20k. USD. It is a fair comparison of their standard to our standard. (The US only gets the CVT) If one would like to get the French version, here, and get UP TO 61 mpg, then it would be a terrible idea to get the US version and save 13k USD. The French Rogue gets 0 miles on 33k. If the dealer fills your tank, say 600 miles. The US Rogue for 33k gets about 91,000 miles. (If gas was $4 a US gallon.) What car gets 300 mpg? I won't go to the link, FYI. It's a good thing these ratings are exactly the same, as in the US version on their standard and their version on our standard pull the same numbers- of course, otherwise this would be irrelevant! Also, it makes complete sense- the story by these people. I mean, when I drive my own car I am very careful and not careless or reckless at all- no one is! But when I go to another country, and rent a car, I am very reckless. I abuse it, and go crazy with it. Surely these people usually maximize their fuel economy by driving intelligently, and were not subconsciously driving more carefully there. |

Sorry, I don't plan further than 6 years ahead in regards to a vehicle cost. At that point the US gas vehicle will only have saved me ~8k USD. :/ |
