My wife and I were out there two years ago, and it was hazy all the time, even in Yosemite.
Yosemite was the clearest of the entire holiday.

There always seemed to be a haze, same in AZ (Tucson).

Heading towards LA from Palm Springs, the smog layer was clearly visible.
It seemed to be worst around Chino - with lots of cattle farms there, and the very pungent smell of ammonia. Can't be healthy to live out there.

For really clear air, were you planning on heading towards Colorado? Absolutely breath-taking in the mountains!!!
Got some decent air museums ?
(Actually, there are some in CO, so I might end up there some day. )

It's illegal here in PRC (People's Republic of Caledonia) to idle your car, even if you are sat in it for a long time. This is ironic of course because driving in Edinburgh consists of the short bursts in between all of the traffic lights builders and others put up whilst digging up the roads - again and again.

@Euro - you got pics of the missionary trip, bringing civilisation and viking customs to the colonies ?

Far too many.

Too many, as in 15.000 + clicks on 2 camera's
I ditched some of those pics on the spot, but you get the idea of the harvest.

Too bad they obviously aren't being driven for efficiency.

Only the old first generation Insights seem to be driven in a more sensible way.
I've seen a surprising number of them around - at least 6 so far.

I'm on Bay Area roads everyday... your observations are, sadly, about right.

Same with the lifted 4x4 trucks...

This time of year, that haze is probably mostly smoke from forest fires, rather than manmade stuff.
