If it's uber clean, it'll fetch about $3k here. It's one of the turbo versions, i.e. less of a turd.
If it's got notable rust on it (can tell from about 50 feet away), price drops to about $2500, as long as everything else is clean.
Literally the lowest price that's average for a FIXABLE version (average guy with a home depot tool set) is about $1200. for that particular car.
Golfs of the same vintage go for closer to the $1200 or less mark because they're all NA and SLOW. The Jetta TD, one step up from your turbo version, and with 92HP, I've seen them in perfect condition go for up to $5000. That's showroom condition and less than 150k, though. As described, I'd be asking conservatively $2100 for it. Makes a good jump off point, you can afford to come down a few hundred when the buyer inevitably notices a crack in the tire's sidewall, etc.

I'd be interested in it myself, but for the pain of getting it across the border.

dang if that's how they all are, sounds like i need to jump the border for my next car, that's almost as good a deal as my car, $800 for a 5 speed ford zx2 I'm getting 35mpg and all the break lines, starter, and battery had just been replaced

Yeah, I could easily sell that for $2100 here, probably wouldn't even get hassled on the price.

Depends a lot on the mileage but I could see the car being put up for sale for $2000 here, in B.C,Canada, but fetching $1500 or so.
A thousand sounds like a good deal, unless it has 400 thousand miles on it, then 500 bucks. IMO
On a side note they do not fetch as much as Honda's do, here in B.C

Well it's 336k KMs, so that's 200k ish miles. I guess high FE stuff is just worth less up here. Our dollar is almost at par with the USA, and my 700 square foot apartment is worth $250k, so things in general are a lot more expensive up here, but I guess the fact that there is so much offshore money floating around makes cheap stuff pretty worthless. That let's me get Insights for $1500 so I don't mind, but if I was smarter I would be sending this stuff south!

You could look into proxy sales, or consignment... but Canuckistanian stuff doesn't necessarily pass Fed Emissions regs, either. Gotta check into that first.

It's true, that's why we get diesel Smart cars and you guys don't. I thought about exporting them down there as they are dirt cheap here (if you buy them from the east anyway). I still find it hard to believe that a 3 cylinder Mercedes diesel won't pass emissions in the states, but that's what I was told by The Man and who am I to argue??

Ah, nomenclature references never get old...
Unless you actually talked to someone in Gov't?
Technically, you could sell them via proxy and just inform whoever buys it that emissions compliance is their responsibility. Sell $500 cheaper than average prices here, and you're sure to see plenty of sales.
Many states don't even have the emissions standards in place, nor do many inspection places actually even check for it, other than a cursory visual check, if that.
