Fixing car get's mixed mileage

Hm, well. Odd story. (i know i haven't posted much, I don't post here a lot, I just come back and visit and lurk now and then). Some may remember my 944 was getting a little over 30mpg, which was nice. However, it progressively was losing in acceleration which was actually doing me more harm than good since it would take me longer to get up to speed (which was hurting in town mileage).

I went through and tested everything, turns out my DME (computer on the car) temperature sender was wrong, and on top of that my Airflow Meter, had flat spots. Turns out on these cars they use an old fashioned potentiometer for the airflow meter that is moved back and forth by a flap (or barn door as some call it) and it moves it up and down. Mine had tracks.

Long story short it was creating a lean condition, which got so bad that my acceleration was flatlining once I hit a certain point (where the flat spot had worn so bad in the potentiometer).

So in the end, the new temp sender and AFM got the acceleration back and the car was idling and running far better. Thing is now my highway mileage decreased, but my in town mileage picked up (since I wasn't flatlining and having issues accelerating). But the good news is that now the in town mileage seems better since i'm spending less time flatlining and having issues accelerating and such.

I also took the advice of a few others and decided to run a slightly hotter thermostat. Original OEM was 72C if I recall, I put in an 80C. Hottest I could run was 85C but I figured I'd go to 80C and see how it runs. All in all in town mileage seems better, highway seems worse. So I seem to have traded one off for the other.

On a positive note my wife is getting VERY good mileage in our ZX2. I showed her the techniques on ecomodder to help with mileage and happy to report that she is getting very good mileage in her daily commute. She's now quite comfortable with driving a manual (even in the snow and crazy weather we've had lately) and is doing well.

Anyway, just a small update since I haven't been on here in ages. Still commuting my little 250 ninja when weather permits, gotta love the 60-70mpg. (I recall reading the guy on here who got was it, 100+? quite inspiring).

Hope everyone is doing well. I'll go lurk and look at the new projects now.

By the way I saw how many active members are online, HOLY MOLY! Grats ecomodder~!
