Ford Aspire rear spoiler

Do we have any other Aspire owners here?
I have two of them and am considering mounting a stock rear spoiler.
I have an SE hatch.
My question is...do these actually control air flow to help fuel economy on them? or are they just for looks?
If they are for looks then I'll forget about putting one on.
I believe they had two types. The wing type and the flat kind that mounted at the bottom of the hatch glass.
