Video: recently "resurrected" GM EV1 - fresh news!

Going through my stack of EVDL posts from last week, this title stood out...

"NEWS FLASH - EV-1 L I V E S"

When GM pulled the plug on the EV1 and crushed the fleet, they crippled about 40-50 vehicles (stripped them of critical components like batteries & control electronics) and donated them to universities and museums.

But what GM couldn't & didn't crush was a small number of privately owned & titled S10EV pickup trucks, which used the same components as the EV1 (the trucks were even configured as front wheel drive, like the car):

A university professor, in collaboration with several others including people who operated "EV Bones" (a private company that restored bought, sold & maintained S10EVs -and so had spares & expertise), have got one of the crippled/donated EV1s working again:

### THE GENERAL MOTORS EV-1 LIVES!
an ATC eNews EXTRA!
12/11/07

RENO, NV -- Jaws hit the pavement at the Renewable L.A. event
<http://www.renewablela.org> in Van Nuys, California, last Saturday
when an EV-1 made an appearance -- and it arrived operating under its
own power! <http://tinyurl.com/2xp7jo>

The EV-1 was made operational by a group working under Mike Seal
<http://tinyurl.com/2hbajz> & <http://blogs.edmunds.com/.eea11e9>. Mike
is professor emeritus and founder of the Vehicle Research Institute
<http://vri.etec.wwu.edu/> at Western Washington University in
Bellingham.

And then on Monday my jaw hit the floor when Alternative Transportation
Club (ATC) member, Bill Brinsmead, called and told me an EV-1 was on
its way to Reno! I don't have the whole story, but it seems that Bill,
being in the university business, was aware of the project to rebuild
the EV-1 so he graciously offered to donate an EV-1 "gas-pump" style
inductive (paddle) charger he owns to professor Seal's group.

Unfortunately, there was no time to contact anyone about the EV-1's
arrival in Reno on Monday. We did not know exactly when it would be
here or for how long and I was committed to other business.

However, my other commitments placed me near Bill's home where I was
told professor Seal would be picking up the charger. So I took a chance
and dropped by. To my surprise and delight I found the EV-1 parked in
front of Bill's house! (It was actually on a trailer being towed by a
motorhome.) Bill was not home as he and the professor, et al, had gone
to lunch.

In any case, the pictures I shot are located at the following URL:
http://electricnevada.org/pics/ev1

And here's another video of the restored EV-1 at Saturday's event in
L.A.:

Be well,
Bob

That's so frickin' cool. I never knew that the EV S10 used the same drivetrain as the EV1. It makes sense though. Now we just need the other 39-49 crippled EV1's out there.

Yeah! I was very surprised to learn about those FWD "EV1" pickups too.

The down-side is a legal one: GM made the crippled EV1 recipients sign contracts saying they'd never licence the cars or drive them on public roads.

I'm happy to see they're already flaunting one of the contract terms.

It'll be interesting to see if GM sics the lawyers on them. I'm hoping they'll be a little gun shy this time.

They should just paint "CHEVY VOLT" on the ev-1 really big so when they try to smush it it'll come out in the news as "GM buries Chevy Volt concept car"

Well, didn't take GM long to rain on the parade:

Quote:
20 December 2007: GM contacted WWU reminding them of the agreement they signed when they received the non working EV1. GM was upset and said their contract had been breached and that the YouTube videos made them look bad, part of the agreement was not to mar GMs image. GM says that the EV1s are not to be driven on on public or private roads. (source)

Wait... for as far back as I can remember (>40 years), GM has been a stodgy, dying company run by short-sided puppets of big oil that produces planned-obsolete products that damage the environment and incent Amerikuns to buy foreign cars.

How has this one car changed that image?

Wont be long now before there is a mysterious break in and the EV-1 goes missing. I'm sure forensic evidence will uncover a cluster of black GM SUV's fleeing the scene of the crime.

She's a hard-core electric car proponent. She's personal friends with lots of people "making it happen" :

Surely that can't just sell it to some one else that didn't sign any of those forms right ?
