There are different usefull applications, the app "torque" is quite versatile for showing data and diagnostics codes.
However it can not change settings on the ECU.

As for driving techniques, this forum lists quite a few in the wiki as well as a few simple and complex mods to get better fuel economy with your car.

I would reccomend the momentary fuel consumption as well as either engine load or MAP gauge.
Even though the fuel consumption shown on the gauge might not be accurate, it helps you to figure out when you use more or less fuel.

If you want to compare your results with others, I reccomend the Spritmonitor app/website.
