Got A Focus, New To EcoModding

Howdy all. I just got a 2014 Focus with a 2.0L and a auto/manual to keep miles off of my Truck and Mustangs. I'm going to be all about the MPG with this bad boy. Looks like I have a lot of learning to do. Just getting started.

I have a long background in motorsports. 20yrs ago I was into the "Fox Body" race scene. Then I moved over to roadracing motorcycles for 10yrs. Ran as high as AMA Superbike. Now I'm back into fast cars and have started a business that specializes in suoerchargers and supercharger cooling systems. We design/develop everything in house.

I have a complete fabrication shop. CNC machines, welders, breaks, etc, etc, etc. There isn't much that I can't fabricate.

Any noob advice you can give me on the Focus?

I was filling out my "garage". Where do I find CD and frontal area numbers at? I didn't fill those boxes.

Well, anyway. Thought I would introduce myself.

Thanks a lot!
Jason

Welcome to the site Jason. Sounds like you'll fit right in here.

The easy things off the bat are to get instrumentation to help you tweak your driving style, air up the tires as much as you're comfortable with, and slap a grill block on it. Check out the 100+ hypermiling tips link up top and the 65+ mods list for more ideas.

One of those is on my short list for my next car, one of the few FFV smaller cars. Planning on running E85, there some places in Mich selling it for $2.19 what I've read from other owners you can still get to mid 30's on E85. Sadly Ann Arbor's prices aren't that good.

All the FFV I've owned lose about 20% mpg so I buy it when about that much cheaper yielding the same cost per mile.

E85 Prices » Michigan

Maybe one of those cheap places is close to you.

Oh, I know all about e85! That's what I run in my race cars. Great stuff!

The FFV option is nice for when it is priced right. It would be a lot better if the factory got a lot more aggressive with the tune on e85 though. They leave a lot on the table. If it wasn't a lease car and I didn't want to screw with the warranty I would do a e85 tune for it and run it all the time.

What did you ride in Superbike, watched it pretty regularly a few years back, when Nicky was riding a RC51, still like to get one of those.

Nicki was in MotoGP by the time I ran SBK (I was already an old fart by then). I did race him in his pre Honda days at Putnum Park I think it was 1997? Maybe 1998? I beat him.:D He was only 15 or 16 then though I think (already been racing for 11-12yrs though).

I ran some AMA SBK stuff 2003-2005. It wasn't like I was hitting all the races, or even took it that seriously. Just ran the stuff that was fun and I knew the tracks real well. Mid Ohio, Road America, Road Atlanta, Barber. Running AMA SBK is just a way to spend a whole bunch of money and maybe get a top 15. I did mostly WERA/CCS stuff. At least there I could win some $$$ and maybe not be out of pocket for the entire weekend.

I rode pretty much everything at some point. Mostly GSXR1000's and Ducati's though.

I haven't even put gas in it yet, LOL! Saturday I have a 2.5hr round trip to run. I'm going to check the tires and do a quick once over before I leave.

I was looking at those scan gauges earlier. I'll order one up tomorrow. I'm a data dork! I love that stuff!

Thanks!
