It's proof that you can sell the uneducated anything in the name of fashion. In this case, the uneducated are likely college educated people who want to give off a certain image but who have no understanding of the technical realities endemic to the efficient operation of an automobile. The poor certainly aren't going to be spending this sort of money for things of no measurable financial benefit.

No green technology will ever make a substantive environmental impact until it is economically viable for most people to use it. This must be from a reduction in net cost of the new technology, not an increase in the cost of the old technology through taxation
