BMW 320d goes 1,000 miles without a refueling (57.4 mpg)

Saw this the other day - wish they'd bring more cars like this over from Europe....

I updated your title. I hate measuring miles/tank. Its a pet peeve of mine.

That being said, that is a veeery nice car. However, the article doesn't state weather its imperial gallons or US...

BMW claims 4.7 liters/100km "combined" for the 320d here:

BMW 3 Series Coupé : Diesel engines (BMW 320d, 325d, 330d)

That translates to 50 US MPG, if I'm not mistaken, so 57.4 US MPG on a long trip sounds reasonable.

This site claims the 57.4 is definitely US MPG:

BMW 320d EfficientDynamics did 1013 miles on one tank | BMWCoop

BMW has apparently fitted low rolling resistance tires and more aerodynamic wheels to the 320d as well:

Drive of the week: BMW 320d Efficient Dynamics review | New Car Reviews - Times Online

And 0-100KM in 7.9 seconds!

1013 miles on 16.1 gallons is 62.9mpg US. That's pretty damn impressive. Too bad its a diesel. I'm getting bored just thinking about it.

Unfortunately very few of the 320d EDs I encounter on the road are driven this economically - I suspect few of them get mid-40s.

There is a 316d too, which I have an eye on.

Nice, now if my friend can just keep her BMW stopping (2 times total brake failure), the doors from opening while driving down the road, the rear doors opening at all, the Air conditioner charged, the fan from exploding, the seat belts to stay attached, the suspension working, and a few other things then we can talk.

I can do that in my Golf no problem :-)

A guy at work has a 200k 1994 323i which is perfect, no issues at all. A bit like the Merc C-class they are either totally perfect or a total disaster. The older 320d had special vanes in the inlet manifold which would occasionally fall off into the turbo.

Madness.

Red face

ooops, during my last tank I reached 1058.7 mi with 15.77 ga, ie 67.13 mpg

Should I change my 13 year old car rated 35.1 mpg ? mine doesn't have any real time fuel consumption display, nor high pressure direct injection, nor fuel cut off, nor auto start-stop, nor brake energy generation, nor electric power steering, nor longer transmission, nor lowered suspension, nor...

Now I certainly have a better CdA

Note : nobody is driving at 59.3 mph (95.4 km/h) on the highway in Europe. Slowest highway PSL is 68.4 mph (110 km/h), it's 80.8 mph (130 km/h) in France. At 70 mph I rarely have to pass someone. My lowest speed is 62.2 mph (100 km/h) on big hills with a slow car lane.

Denis.

Mine is % gains, because they're very misleading. 1% of 20 MPG is .2, while 1% of 100 MPG is 1.
