Recently bought a Hyundai Elantra Eco and was looking for info on how to improve MPG through better driving techniques. It looks like I found the place.

How new is the car to you? Have you got baseline results for it yet?

Definitely the first step is to start tracking your MPG so you can monitor your progress.

The car is brand new. Bought it on April 25th. I'm on my second tank of gas. I got 39.12 mpg (actual) on the first tank, 80% city driving. Not sure if that is the baseline you mentioned.
I try to time the stop lights, but they seem to conspire against me. I coast when I can, but try not to be a nuisance to other drivers. I'm sure I have a lot to learn about ecomodding.

How close was actual to the car's MPG gauge? Is the factory gauge useful? How many (instant/trip)?

Baseline... I just meant what you were getting before you got serious, but it sounds like you're already serious. Keep a fuel log here or somewhere so you can watch your progress.

39 is great, especially for a brand new car. It'll improve as the car breaks in, all else being equal.

Does it have a "manual" shift mode? Sometimes you can manually upshift before the programming will.

I love these cars. At 60 mph I bet your RPMs are down at 1900 or so, no? Hyundai has become a great global automaker.

The factory guage was very close, less than 1 mpg above actual.

Yes, I am serious about mpg efficiency, I bought a new Toyota Prius in 2008 and drove it till I traded it in on the Elantra. It got great mpg, 52 average here in Tallahassee. However, it had a few mechanical problems that I had repaired so I decided not to push my luck by keeping it.

I know how to drive the prius to get the best mpg, but the Elantra is a completely different type drive train. The prius thrives in stop and go traffic, the Elantra does not. The Elantra likes a steady even speed, from 15 to 60 mph. As long it is a steady speed it will be getting over 50 mpg. I'm sure it is because the 1.4 turbo GDI is so efficient.

It does have a dual clutch 7 speed transmission with manual shift, but I really don't know the proper time to shift to improve mpg.

Yes, very close to 1900 from what I can recall. I agree, they have become a quality company and it shows in their vehicles. I think they are nearing Toyota and Honda quality. That is why I thought the Elantra Eco would be a good choice.
