Modding the new 2023 Prius

So eventually when my Ioniq does give out, the obvious car I’ll be looking at getting would be the 2023 Prius. Sadly it takes about a 3 mpg hit

Some obvious day one mods would be smooth wheel covers ( no idea why Toyota is going for the bad aero open spoke wheels, oh wait, it’s clearly to look sporty and appeal to a new sporty market)

And an adjustable air suspension. I do like how it’s 6 inches off the ground now versus 5 from the Previous gen. Odd though since most people think lower cars look sportier. This extra inch also hurts the MPG and aerodynamics. I’d probably get a suspension that would let me lower it to 4 inches but also raise it up to 8 inches for deep snow driving

The new Prius Cd is up to .27 now versus last gens .24

So for the aero nerds out there, what would the CD drop down to after lowering it about 2 inches and adding smooth wheel covers?

Why would your 4 year old car be nearing end of life?

My newest vehicle is 17 years old... that said my parent's '12 Prius is nearing end of life due to the battery degradation.

I absolutely loved the Gen III Prius. I'm sure the newer ones are great as well.

i have 170,000 miles on my ioniq and a bad catalytic converter. they said its 4k to replace. thats too much to put into a car with that many miles

i mean im not getting the new prius now. im saying a year or two from now

in japan they have a 2023 prius '' eco'' version with 15 inch tires and a 1.8l engine versus the 17 inch or 19 inch tires and 2.0l engine. guess americans still care about sporty over fuel economy since they dont have the eco version in the line up for the USA. hopefully that will change in a year or two

Oregon doesn't require DEQ... but if you want to part ways with it in a couple years, send me your purchase price.

I wonder if all the starts/stops and associated heating/cooling causes more rapid wear on the cat?

i think its from running over a tree stump or something. they said the whole thing is damaged and not '' clogged'' and it all has to be replaced. no idea why

other first day mod i would get on the prius would be a cat shield. more protection and also better aero that contributes to the flat floor

🤔

$4,000 sounds very high.

Here’s a OEM cat. in Georgia. A little over a $1,000 with tax and shipping.

A few hours work at shop rate is not $3,000. More like several hundred. However, there are probably gaskets and maybe some other bits and pieces that need to be added.

Also, aftermarket catalytic converters are available for a fraction of the cost of a oem part. A competent muffler shop should be available to splice it in. (Depending on configuration and what’s damaged)

Here are some examples of aftermarket cats.

Rock Auto also has a large selection.

I would get a second opinion or two if I were you.

I'd just let that P0420 code ride.

A long time ago, when my GF started getting codes on her Ranger, I just knocked the honeycomb out of the cat with a steel rod. She said it sounded awesome afterwards. Had I known the platinum would be worth a fortune in the future, I'd have kept the debris.

My company policy is to get a new vehicle every 4 years... the Mazda is on year 6. There were no good replacement options.

With plans to expand the family, I see no way around a 6+ seat vehicle, which basically implies a minivan.

If they don't offer something in time, I'll have to purchase a vehicle on my own; something I've not done since 2015 when I picked up the Prius.
