1991 Honda CRX HF:
2011-05-28 replaced sticking front calipers. Engine missing at part throttle when warn, camshaft position sensor or fuel pump?? I drove it for the first time yesterday.
I found out by calculation that this is a California model, with a 3.25 final drive and not a 2.954 ratio, oh the disappointment. The car is misfiring under part throttle. I have determined that is is a lean misfire. I advanced the ignition timing 10 degrees and set the spark gap at .050 it helped allot for cruse, but first gear is way too tall and the engine bucks.
I don't know why Honda geared it this way, its like starting in second gear and first to second is a big jump, second to third is OK, third to fourth is close and fourth to fifth is closer. The overall ratio in fifth gear is 2.255, which gives 2084 rpm at 65 mph with 175/70R14 tires. It's not far from my Saturn with has a 2.458 top ratio and 185/65R15 tires at 2194 RPM. I don't have to slip the clutch in the Saturn. I think Honda just put in a lower final drive gear for the HF. This car will go through clutches in city traffic, stop and go is a real pain.
The CRX handles great even with the 165/80R15 ties. (10% bigger diameter than stock). I bolted on my Saturn rims. The Saturn rims have more offset and the scrub radius turn out to be close to zero. Which makes the car track great. Brakes are weak, though, with the big tires. The big tires make the final drive the same as the 49 state model. The way to determine scrub radius is to turn the steering wheel from lock to lock on concrete, then take the front wheel off and look at the circle marks on the tire. I read that the civic model has larger front brakes and disks, which could be a good swap if I keep the big wheels.
Saturn rims with 165/80R15 tires mounted on Honda CRX HF, no rubbing, drives good, but weak braking. This would give 1751 RPM at 65 mph on the 49 state model
