High mounted mirrors.

Most modern cars have the mirrors mounted on the doors around the same height as the lower edge of the door glass and sitting just about where the instruments are in terms of height.

Can anyone see any advantages (or not) having them fitted at the top of the door so they are at the same height as the internal mirror?

Would the aero be changed much?

Just thinking out loud here.

Peter.

I don't know if this has a lot of relevance with this, but I read it a while ago and it refers to mirror position and aerodynamics in F1 cars.

The end of Pod Wing mounted mirrors Scarbsf1's Blog

It seems the folks in F1 are progressing backwards

Another interesting article/paper I found that talks about aerodynamics and noise generation of side mirrors

Laurentiu,

Thanks for the post and for the pdf as well. That is one I didn't have.

I agree the F1 crowd are regressing but I think the FIA is much to blame.

ANY attempt at progress seems to be blocked by them altering the regulations and it appears to me this is one of the main reasons F1 is falling from favour.

That rant aside the mirror placement at the roofline would be no less convenient than where it usually is now.
That position was originally determined by the need to manually adjust mirrors so they ended up being around arm's length from the driver.

With power mirrors now standard fitting any fitting location can be easily covered so aero may be the deciding factor if there in fact is some advantage to having them elsewhere.

Cheers , Peter.
