Confused by what you mean, other than i'm aware there were some early aircraft engines where the crankshaft/pistons were basically stationary and the block itself rotated around them.

As I recall they had some pretty serious gyroscopic effects. Such a design would save the "extra" weight of an additional flywheel, but still may not be as practical. I forget the math but a 25krpm flywheel stores more energy with like a 20lb flywheel than something 10x more stores at perhaps 1/10th the rpm.

Flywheels are well suited to specific applications for storing energy. A good example is seen in the video link below of my 3/4 horse electric woodsplitter; I call it the Electro-Split. It's very fast, very quiet, and the stored energy of the flywheels works well in the short duration of splitting. There are other types of mechanical splitter videos that also show the power of the stored energy in flywheel(s).
This flywheel storage also works extremely well in smoothing out powerstrokes and electric motor start-up when running the Listeroid.
