Talking Honda B16 Gas Mileage

Hi everyone,

I just joined this website today and I have been pursuing better gas mileage for a few months now. I drive a 1992 Honda Civic CX with a JDM B16a SiRII motor. My car and all the mods are listed here: http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2584850

I used to be Speed Racer everywhere I went and I still averaged about 30-33mpg. I started driving slower this year and my average shot up 34-37mpg. Then I fixed my exhaust leak, bought some larger diameter headers, ran some fuel system cleaner and on my most recent fill-up I got 41.49mpg. I have looked around on some websites and I think that is pretty good for the B16 motor. Any of you out there with B16 motors, please post your mods and mpg numbers so we can figure out how to make these numbers grow higher.

Welcome aboard.

B16s are few and far between on this board, but your mileage is impressive. I used to own a 98 Integra GSR and I could eek out 42MPG with it too, so there is something in the ECU program that allows us to squeak some mileage out.

Frankly, I'm surprised that going to a larger diameter header netted you more mileage. what did you upgrade from, the stock B16 header?


Your car would be a perfect candidate for a D15Z1 swap, then you could pull off 60MPG

Thanks for the welcome. That is impressive mileage for your GSR. Nice driving.

I upgraded from a ceramic 4-2-1 header to a stainless steel 4-1 header with larger diameter piping. However I did so many things at once to fix and tune-up my car along with changing my driving habits that I cannot attribute any one factor to the increase in mileage. I am currently running some fuel system cleaner through the car and making any effort to drive slower than on my last tank, so we will see what happens. I really don't know what to expect yet because I only fixed everything completely early on during my last tank of gas in which I achieved 41.49mpg.

I completely agree with you on the motor swap, however it is nice to have the ability to go fast at certain times. If I can achieve 45+mpg and run less than 15 seconds in a quarter mile, I will be very excited. Will it happen, I'll find out.

If you still have the 4-2-1 header around, it would be a great experiment to put that back on for about 6 tanks of gas to see if there is a marked improvement in low-end torque and gas mileage.

Hello!
I have Honda Civic VTI with the B16A2 engine. It's bone-stock with 185k miles on it. Avg. MPG 36.7 with my wife driving. Some long trips (40 miles) and to work (6 miles). I think that's great :-)
I am already looking for a Civic VX.....but we are gonna miss the 160 hp! :-)

I have a B20 with a semi-built B16 head in my 99 coupe and I can only seem to get about 30mpg highway with it. So I decided to build a 91 CRX for fuel economy purposes. And I agree with you, I know for sure I'm going to miss the power while driving the rex.
