How About That, 2014 Corvette Gets 37.3 mpg

Popular Mechanics economy runs a 2014 Corvette with a 7 speed; puts hope back into me about putting together a high power car that gets excellent fuel economy.

Hypermiling the C7 - Taking the 2014 Chevy Corvette on a Fuel-Economy Run - Popular Mechanics

If it deactivates half its cylinders while cruising, it's a virtual 3.1 liter four-cylinder. That's part of where the economy comes from. That, and an intergalactic overdrive. 1,100 rpm at 55 mph? That's a hypermiler's wet dream....

Relevant bits:
  • 124.7 mile round trip
  • highway only run: @ 55 mph (10 mph below the limit)
  • windows up, air conditioning was off
  • Eco mode
  • no wind, temperature mid-60s
  • traffic was light

2014 Corvette Cd ?

Has anyone run across the Cd for it? They've gone into some detail about the car's aerodynamic development, but no numbers.Pity.:(

It's listed in this Chevrolet brochure as .29, under Performance on p. 22.

Not just Cd, but CdA. The Corvette is what, about 1/3 the height of a typical SUV? And likely a bit narrower, too. Figure that at highway speeds most of the energy goes into fighting aerodynamic drag, and it's not that surprising.

Even with the parameters of the test, to get that kind of fuel economy out of a 190 mph sports car is amazing. Can definitely learn a lot from this thing. Just wish that there was an affordable GDI engine available ( but then again, I haven't looked for one ).

see my thread...it's all about the gears......
I remember the 1984 redesigned corvette. A buddy of mine drove his new vet to my wedding (dallas to sa ) and got 27mpg at 65mph. I refused to belive him until he showed me the computer mpg screen

It's even a lot smaller than other sports cars on the market. My mustang looks massive compared to my father's c7.

I wonder how much better mpg the corvette could squeak out if it had a 2.73 or even 3.15 rear end gear ratio. Highway cruising could easily be 900-1000 rpm at 55

The Corvette should only be getting better, too. Allegedly, stop start technology and potential of more hybrid/electric features are in the works- forget which GM big wig was talking about it, but it was no joke.

I wouldn't mind hypermiling [a brand new] one for the first few years [of its life].
