How far away do you live from work?

I'm about 8 miles (i.e. 16 mile round-trip). How many miles do you have
to drive each day? I'm assuming most people here have pretty long commutes, but maybe I'm assuming wrong.

Cd 02-26-2010 09:58 PM

I live within walking distance - literally.

MadisonMPG 02-26-2010 10:02 PM

The best ecomod for you car, is to not drive it. (not really, but you get the idea)

I live 2 miles away, and ride my bike.

Yup, I have a 35+ mile commute to work. If not for that, I probably wouldn't be here. It's not that I wouldn't support and applaud this kind of forum, it's just that there isn't enough time in the day.

I used to drive 32 miles one way until I got laid off and had to try and find another job. I was on unemployment for 8 months, and finally found another job. Now I drive 52 miles one way. I live in an area where the county unemployment rate is above 20%. The largest employer in town closed down and moved the production of the auto parts to Mexico.

Lazarus 02-26-2010 10:50 PM

My commute is 25.6 miles one way.

gone-ot 02-26-2010 11:04 PM

portal-to-portal: 26.2 miles oneway, 52.4 miles round trip each workday.

...when this posting is 'done' it'd make an interesting "plot" to gain some idea of how well (or not) we 'fit' into GM's 40 mile range day-dream.

a8ksh4 02-27-2010 12:37 AM

3 miles. I don't bicycle as much as I ought to, but I do carpool 9 out of 10 days.

I have a 35 mile commute to school twice a week; I always use this commute to get my average mpg up for the tank. Go and slow traffic on Hwy 50 is great for pulse and glide and mpg.

redline5th 02-27-2010 01:04 AM

20 miles to both school and work from home 1 way. Not too bad. 40 miles round trip.

Well, so far it's 5 out of 9.

Neddy Seagoon 02-27-2010 07:04 AM

I drive about 30 klicks (18 miles) each way on country roads, can't wait to get my bike out on a regular basis (Kawasaki W650). Roll on Spring!!

i have a 6hr round trip commute each weekend.

RobertSmalls 02-27-2010 08:14 AM

^^ needs an Insight more than I do. Which can be said of most people, actually.

10.5mi there, 9.7mi back. We have asymmetrical expressway exits.

Now, how many of us would press our employers for "plug-in vehicle parking spots"?

tim3058 02-27-2010 08:35 AM

32 miles each way to work. Everything else (stores, bank, etc) is 16 mi away.

travelingaaron 02-27-2010 10:40 AM

I was driving 37 miles one way. The best part is that I never leave the city of Jacksonville and still go that far. This city is spread out way to much for people to be saving money on not driving.

i had a civic hybrid, loved it, sold it be cause i had to climb a an icy steep driveway 6mo a year.

MadisonMPG 02-27-2010 10:54 AM

My dad lives 27 miles away from his work, 85% of which is highway.

Not to hijack your thread but why don't you put a poll with commute round trip mileage in it. Say something like

10+
30+
40+
50+
60+

Regards
Z

Now ya tell me... :)

rbrowning 02-27-2010 01:01 PM

For the two years leading up to November it was 125 miles per day, before that it was 180. Now I call the unemployment office every two weeks and my car hasn't been started yet this week.

Holy moly! Sorry to hear that you're out of work, though.

5speed5 02-27-2010 01:05 PM

I started a new thread with a poll

There is a new thread now. Please post in that one and vote in the poll.

I added the poll to this thread. I am going to delete the other thread.

Work's about 30 feet. Now ask how far I live from skiing, hiking, etc, because that's what I do most of my driving for.

5speed5 02-27-2010 01:31 PM

Great! Now we need everyone to go back and vote in the poll.

gone-ot 02-27-2010 01:34 PM

voted!

Last summer the company asked for ideas on how we could improve our "carbon footprint". I suggested allowing us to use flex time to avoid commuting. I surveyed the department (Engineering) of 28 and the average was 64 miles per day with the highest at 144. I figured that if we could only get our work loads / schedules to work out to allow us to not commute 1 day every other week, our department would save 20 tons of CO2 per year. They bought us reusable coffee cups instead.

...hell, even a styrofoam coffee cup is "reusable" if you don't mind the brown patina.

Chalupa102 02-27-2010 08:47 PM

I don't work but i commute back and forth to college everyday, except Mondays when i ride my bicycle. Depending which way i go it's between 21.6 and 23.4 miles driving, but it's only 19.1 miles on my bicycle because i take a different way.

I wish you the best and hope you can find something soon.

It's too late to change the poll options, but a geometric spacing of the poll options would have been better: 2, 3, 5, 7, 10, 15, 23, 34, 50, 77, 115mi, etc. The difference between 5 and 10mi is much more important than the difference between 45 and 50mi.

The point I'm trying to make here is that I like math.

NeilBlanchard 02-27-2010 10:41 PM

Hi,

At the moment, I am working in my own house -- no commute other than a few steps in my slippers...

SentraSE-R 02-27-2010 10:49 PM

I'm retired, so I have no commute. When I worked, my commute ranged from 3 miles each way to 40. I only drove a single occupant car regularly to work 2 of those years. The rest of the time, I bicycled, motorcycled, carpooled, vanpooled, bused, or rode BART or a ferry.

Ryland 02-27-2010 11:08 PM

I used to live 100-150 miles from work depending on the project, at the time I thought that the pay was good then I did the math and realized that I could not afford to do that any more!
Now I'm 4 miles away and have an EV to take me there, I work less and have more time and money.
A year and a half ago I bought a house that is about half a mile closer to work but is right in town, 8 blocks from down town, now I drive half as much.

zjrog 02-28-2010 10:29 PM

Still will have a commute of 100 miles round trip, but changing jobs in the same place. Giving up my 4 person carpool for a 10 passenger vanpool instead... The switch is like a pay raise, as my new employer covers the van expenses. Less wear and tear on my Jeep!!!

Good to hear you found another job. It's pretty slim pickins around here. Thankfully our shop is one that is still going but has slowed down a lot in the last year.

I drive 25.6 miles one way, which is the shortest and fastest way but not best for mpg. A different way is a mile longer (4%) but gets me only about 4% better mpg and the road tears up my car more.

kstruve 03-03-2010 11:28 PM

Home Biz

I also work from my home, so no commuting for me either. ZERO miles!

busypaws 03-04-2010 10:43 AM

4 days a week I live 5.5 miles. 2 days a week I live 1300 miles.
On Monday night I fly from Tucson to San Jose. Pick up my car at office (next to long term parking lot) and drive to apt. Reverse the trip Friday night. I calculated my CO2 usage with the plane flight and driving 11 miles a day and driving to airport in Tucson and it was not as bad as I thought. In fact better then someone driving SUV back/forth to work for 50 miles a day.

doviatt 03-04-2010 11:24 AM

I'm 118 miles round trip. Same story about lack of local jobs. I do pick up a carpool about 20 miles into my commute and the best part is he pays for 2/3 of my fuel. He gets door to door reliable service. I provide great gas mileage. I plan to get a closer job when things pick up.
