How much HP and Torque can a TCC handle???

common sense tells me that they would have to be pretty durable to handle what they do for as long as they do. But I still wonder why they unlock at 90% load, is it because the car knows you want more power so it lets the rpm go up?
how much gas can i give it without damaging it in lower gears? part of the reason i ask is because cars don't generate much power at low cruising rpms. Is that why TCC don't lock up all the time in 2nd through...?

A torque converter is able to multiply torque when there is a significant difference between input and output speeds. Torque converter - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
at %90 load, maybe they think you want more torque (not always true)?

I think the OP is asking about the lock-up clutch.

if you unlock the torque converter, it can multiply torque, yes, inefficiently.
