Just getting back from day 1 of Lemons at NPR

Tons of fun.

Funny thing was that is I heard "good thing there aren't any greenies out here" at least 20 times. The way I figure it; Lemons is recycling racing, so it's green (ish) :-) .

On the A car we blew a mastercylinder, blew the corner, crashed in to a levy, smushed the drivers front fender, and popped a few coolant hoses off. Swapped a mastercylinder in from a parts car, which had no working rear circuit, we deemed rear brakes unnecessary and sent her back out.

On the b car
We killed the motor dead very crispy, oil in coolant, difficult to turn over, and coolant in oil.

Here's a few iphone pics I shot.
MobileMe Gallery

I'll post more from day 2 tomorrow.

For those not familiar with Lemons.

Finished #10

The peoples curse (spec Miata) chickened out and ran. Some guys with a rabbit donated it to the cause (of being crushed). If you thought that crushing a car is a total waste, it isn't true there were about a dozen guys scrounging for parts out of the wreckage.

LOTS of fun.

Only place you can see a block being JB welded next to a cylinder head being re-surfaced with a belt sander, next to a motor swap, next to a group of terrorist, next to all sorts of other wild stuff.

B car has a severe rod knock along with several other serious problems.

HAha good times. I have driven for three lemons races here in Tracy, CA at altamont. I think the first one I drove in was the first ever but Im not positive.

Theres always plenty of carnage! I got to watch a early 90s integra literally spit out internals onto pit road. One time I was mid corner when a front control arm ball joint sheared off and the car dropped anchor as the inside front wheel went sideways. That was interesting. And another time our car failed from blown head gasket from a coolant leak from a little love tap. I drove the car during its last hours of survival, running on gas air and water, probably oil too. As long as you kept your foot to the floor it would run..

And there is NOTHING like pit maneuvering the yahoos that can't drive. So long as the officials arent looking.

For the people who have little or no race driving experience its spectacular. Time of their lives. There are no required credentials or qualifications other than the willingness to die. For the rest of them that CAN drive, its frustrating at times (like when you get passed under yellow and nobody notices) and its something you have to try once, but for me ..... well one friend of mine summarized my opinion this way: "winning a lemons race isnt worth a warm bucket of piss." Its a lot of work for something that dont mean nothing.

I have always wanted to do this. I love ugly cars, I love hacking things, and I love racing. Congrats on being able to participate!

Yup
Organizers choice winners.

They showed up in stertypical turbins, robes (I don't know what they are called), Osama Bin Ladin beards, AK47's, and spent most of their time piled on top of various vehicles. Their race car was a Mitsubishi mirage painted in drab colors with bull horns playing stereotypical arabic music. They were awesome.

Here's a pic of them

The goofy looking guy in front of them is one of our drivers.

Awesome!

It should be obvious that if you can drive you shouldn't really be on a lemons track. Lol
The occasional lack of enforcement can be very maddening, but I just ignore it.
