Hypermiling made me a free man

Before I used to care a lot about official mileage figures. I even got a VTEC-E Civic instead of the DOHC VTEC one I really wanted on that basis.

Now I don't really care so much, as I know my driving technique will allow me to extract good numbers from pretty much anything. I get like 40 MPG from my S2000 on a run.

This means I am now free to choose the car I really want and love without being constrained by the mileage figures or feeling guilty about it! Hypermiling made me free and a happier person. Hurray for that!

Usually we're all concerned about mileage records and that sort of thing so I thought this is a refreshing way of looking at hypermiling. Sorry for the rant!

Good job. I too feel the same way. I could get a Metro or Civic, nothing wrong with them, they're just not my cup of tea. I still have an Escort wagon with 5 speed, in pretty poor shape, I don't like it but I thought I was going to have to fix it up and drive it if I wanted 35 mpg or better. But now I am happy that I don't have to. I like the old a-bodies and am still shooting for 40 mpg but am getting closer. I am hoping to finish the kammback/boattail soon and that should get me closer.

enjoying what is driven and hypermiling, with engineering a railroad is a rare thing. I enjoy my old buggy in the 40s as well.

Oh god no! It is beautiful as is.
The thing with sports cars and hypermiling is that you can be economical in your supermarket run and then let rip on the track or on your favorite mountain pass whenever you feel like it.

I was thinking about getting a Calibra for that very same reason (pretty much the best CdA of any production car). However, sports cars usually have more expensive spare parts, so they do cost a little more to run. I would love to see what I could achieve by hypermiling one though. I used my fuel economy calculator and determined that I should be able to achieve equivalent or better with an econobox, unfortunately (due to mass difference and engine size), so I'm not getting one.
