Unless the Dr or lawyer came from a rich family then they could have had hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt at their peak.

Sounds like you joined during the Obama years. It seems like during Obama resources that informed military members of rights and services extended to them dried up during those years and you had to lean about stuff word of mouth from old guys you happen to work with.
During Obama the number of non citizen who served and met requirements gaining citizenship by US military service plummeted simply because no one told them.

I came home and applied for an in-school deferment. When it asked what type of deferment I was requesting I saw the Active Duty option.

Wait, what?!

The thing is, I do not know that I would have made the payments that I did had I not been required to, but had I, I would have paid down my loans 50% more.
