ICE technology evolution, extreme reduction of weight & parts

A reciprocating...rotary...axial engine?!! For a comparable engine size/power; extreme 30% reduction of moving weight and reduction of spark plugs and injectors! Unexpected; unusual wear on that all-important reciprocator/ball joint and compression head ring.

Call it the 'Gatling'. Next, how to super/turbocharge that...

Duke

Doesn't the US Navy have torpedoes which use a similar engine;which runs on a gasoline mixture which provides its own oxygen?

All the *old* sliding seals problems of a Wankel...with...the *new* problems of socketed push-rod (reciprocator) pistons!

Plus, that's a LOT of mass rotating around there...have they ever heard of the gyroscopic problems encountered with the Gnome aircraft engines of WWI?

A very convoluted and busy system but at least this axial design seems more balanced; have easier seals, opposed pistons and cylinders & connecting rods are NOT spinning. And it is multi-fuel!

Axial engine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wikipedia lists it among the 4 modern of 14 total variants. aerohead is right.

The most well-known application is in torpedoes, where the cylindrical shape is desirable. The modern Mark 48 torpedo is powered by a 500 hp swashplate engine geared to a pump-jet propulsor. It is fueled by Otto fuel II, a monopropellant that requires no oxygen supply and can propel the torpedo at up to 65 knots (120 km/h) (74.56 mph).
