Wait...the article said the engine was wrong and the steering wheel was on the wrong side and that it was likely from around 2000. If that is true then it wasn't really a classic

"While it carried a VIN plate from a car made in 1988 that would have been legal, none of its details checked out: that VIN matched a right-hand-drive vehicle, not a left-hand-driver, and flagged a different engine. Best they could tell, this Rover Mini was likely built around the year 2000."

Not arguing that it was a stupid thing to do though.

Who cares, reagans gray market laws were an ignorant backward thinking bending to industry lobbiests when made and is still boneheaded today.

I see no reason that here in the US we should be able to import any used gray market car from any 1st world country.

Original Mini production continued until 2000 when BMW refused to allow Rover to continue to use the name as they wanted to launch their own brand of MINI aimed at the hairdressers of the world.
