Intercity-flying/driving commuting coming in reality
AirCar (V5) flying car developmental milestone, a 35-mile flight from Nitra and to Brastislava, Slovakia's capital. In three minutes it converted from car mode to plane mode. Powered by a BMW 1.6-litre engine it produces 140 hp, has a fuel consumption at a rate of 18 liters an hour, and it has an estimated range of the 1,000 kilometers. It requires a take-off run of 300 meters before getting Vlof/airborne, after which it can reach top speeds up to 200 km/h in flight. The aerodynamic lift-body fuselage will have space for passengers, its wings are retractable, tail surfaces fold and have a parachute deployment system. The ultra-lightweight 2-seater weighs 1,100 kgs and can even carry additional load of 200 kgs per flight. It's retracted body package is compact enough for conventional road use. The pitch elevator surface generates lift in plane mode and car mode, the rear spoiler generates downforce. In future developments, they'll have a twin-engine and amphibian versions.

Would be way too tempted to go into leapfrog mode in a reckless way when my GPS shows horrid Portland traffic ahead. Would also be too tempted to run the thing off a cliff just for fun.

I love that any new thing presented to freebeard is shown by him to be new packaging of an old thing.

Interesting. I've always thought airships would be a good form of air travel, but I guess their too slow and expensive.
Is this the answer to Why don't cars have airfoils to partially take the weight of the car??

Well...
It is a “oddity”.
In that it does both (fly and drive) rather well .

electric aircraft
Have you folks seen 'The Race For The Electric Plane' on PBS NOVA?
It's a good hour of television. Remarkable!

I've just been interested in twin boom tails lately. P-38 air ambulance.
A more up-to-date comparsion? The V-22 osprey.

It was all the anti-hydrogen propaganda.
If we'd segued to hot hydrogen for main lift and steam (~same as Helium) for modulating lift and jacketing the hydrogen core for insulation and safety; then air travelers might not be getting the deep vein thrombosis and radiation doses of today.

I just don't know why the helicopter isn't favored? They're fairly fuel efficient and fairly fast.
Some sort of chopper\plane hybrid would probably be the best compromise of VTOL, efficiency, and speed.
Osprey really isn't a bad idea as far as all that goes.
