Japan will allow cameras instead of mirrors

Japanese auto industry is allowed by legislative changes to replace mirrors with high resolution cameras. The advancement of HD/UHD/4K digital cameras and sensor technologies will allow cars have better aero-efficiencies and 'blind spot' awareness/safety. Manufacturers, Ichikoh Industries and Robert Bosch GmbH will provide camera and monitor display combinations to replace mirrors on existing vehicles. Suppliers and installers will still have to devise and engineer optimized camera installations and stable monitor attachments for the various brands' interior spaces. USA might adopt camera/display standards by 2018.

A problem is it would be easier for law enforcement to see that a mirror is broken, but not if there is an issue with your camera.

On the other hand, is there more of a chance that people would look at their displays than mirrors, since they could see them easier?

Not that people pay attention to back-up cameras, speedometers, the road, other cars, or anything but their phone...

The Chevy Bolt EV will have an 80 degree rear view video mirror, so hopefully we get side view video mirrors, too.

Another nice thing about cameras is that they don't have to be mounted where mirrors currently are. Instead, they could be mounted at the very front of the car, leaving no blind spot. This should cut down on a lot of accidents.

They could install multiple cameras/IR/ultrasonic sensors at different points and stitch them together on a large & full panoramic multiple spectrum display, even maybe on a HUD.

An interesting aftermarket multiple camera (controllable camera views), recording and security system. http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x32dlyh

Stitched and seamless 360 camera viewer/recorder.

360 camera/display system with calibration kit instructions. http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Unive...364289391.html
