Jeep Liberty Fan Removal

has anybody here removed the fan on a liberty? the last vehicle i had with an engine driven fan had a belt driven fan with an integral clutch (individual blades fastened to the clutch itself), so i'm not sure how to go about removing it. will the reduction in weight throw out the balance since the belt tension pulls on the pulley? the fan pulley is on the bottom in the center next to the letter "u" in "caution" on the fan shroud

I removed the clutching fan from my Subaru, it mounts to the water pump pulley. It didn't hurt balance, and it improved the response of the engine (less inertia & drag at high RPM).

Make sure you add an electric fan and either a thermo-switch, or a manual switch, and pay attention. I found a nice low-profile fan on Summit Racing. Have fun!

already have an electric fan on it, that's standard, the clutched fan is part of the tow package.

I don't think it will be a problem if you remove it. Plus, with the electric fan you can add a toggle switch so that have more control of your cooling system. Get a three position switch so you can have ON/OFF/AUTO(thermo controlled).

Removed mine

I keep the mechanical off of my v-6 Dakota, with a full upper grille block for all but july and august. No problem

My 4.7L dakota had a mechanical fan and an electric fan. I haven't had the mechanical fan on for the last 10,000 miles. No problems. Same engine as your have, only 2 more cylinders.

Admittedly, my golf is a totally different beast... However, all the miles I've put on Herbie so far have been with no fan at all. I pull hills at 1/2 throttle in 3rd gear, around 30mph, which seems like 3000rpm, and still don't overheat, our even warm up for that matter.

On most Mopars with an electric and mech fan, if they're one in front of the other, then the mech fan is likely just due to tow package, and it will be fine without it. There are a few exceptions, like the Jeep Cherokee (XJ), where they're side-by-side, so you need both, or to replace both with higher flow e-fans.

yeah, mine is due to the tow package, my friend has a nearly identical liberty(same year, same engine, same drivetrain) and doesn't have the tow package, and therefore no clutched fan, i just wasn't sure if there was something they did with the "no fan" engines to make up for the weight difference hanging off the pulley
