Just had my BEST TANK!
69.1 mpg, over 678.8 miles in my 2000 Insight.
Wa-hooo!!! AND - This weekend I plan to clean the EGR manifold passages. That should give some additional improvement. |
Nice job!
FYI - I happen to know from experience you can drive at least twenty miles with zero bars showing on the gas gauge, so I expect to see you in the 700s next tank:thumbup: |
Woohoo, congrats. :)

But yes - it should improve with a cleaning of the EGR passages. I've been spraying the nuts and bolt heads with PB Blaster in preparation. Very rusty. They look awful. The gasket and 3 o-ring things are ready for me to pick up at local Honda place. |
Check the torque on the plugs while you're at it, they tend to back themselves out on these things.
My first Insight was running a little rough when I bought it and I assumed it was the motor mount/3-cyl issue. But I went to check the plugs to see if they needed to be cleaned, and found that one had worked its way almost out of the hole, the only thing stopping it was the coil being screwed down |
The plugs do tend to back out on these motors.
My most recent tank: http://i.imgur.com/CtWprJc.jpg My driving technique is still being refined after two years; it's largely what is responsible for the improved mileage. |
70 is just an inch away. Keep going, you'll do it!
Also, this thread has good info. I wondered how far I could go on the gas gauge and had no idea about spark plugs backing out! How often do you guys check those? |
I found mine loose when I decided to change my spark plugs preventatively about 6 months after getting the car (~1.5 years ago), as they were still the original plugs at 170k miles, so far as I could tell. I haven't checked them since, but ought to. I'll report back whether I find them loose or not this evening.

Just got started w my 2000 TDI 5 speed Beetle, pre-SGii, 49.87MPG. Had a 93 Civic Hatch 5 speed, best on that was 47MPG. That car had the special VX or HX engine. Someone stole it while I was on a Valentine's Gig a few years back. Come out 2:30 in the morning & no car! Had so many rust holes in it, friends called it the cheese curl car, spray foamed the holes, haha!:D
