Yes, would would be infinitely easier, and I should probably go that way, but I consider cars to be assemblies of metal and plastic, and was trying to maintain that.

I might be able to un-bolt the trunk lid, leaving the hinge, and then build my own frame, although I keep thinking that the only way to really do this right would be to actually convert my coupe into a hatchback.

Honestly, I think that shaping Lexan covers for the tailgate would look better than most alternatives. I have read comments on here about the attractiveness of trailer lights. The most important thing is to prove that it works, but I feel that I really need to make something that will look good and be well-built. People always have stupid and arbitrary opinions, but if at least 51% of "reasonable" people think that I did a good job, then I will think that I proved the idea.
