You could probably work wonders with a fiberglass front bumper too. I personally would like to get a cheapo fiberglass front bumper and turn it into a bubble so I can help the wind bend around my front end instead of hitting it and being forced around and maybe mold the top of it so that it creates a smooth angle to the hood, and a lip that goes around the headlight so the top of the bumper has a lip that plexi can be attached to to make one incredibly aero bumper.

has anybody considered replacing their hood and fenders with fiberglass? They're a lot lighter to begin with and from what I understand it's easy to sand them and add more fiberglass to create what you want from it so it looks more "whole" and not pieced together. Plus it erases all the little edges that catch the wind when you slap on pvc. Or does it not flow with this site's mantra since you have to put up more money than to just slap on the pvc?

On my '95 Saturn TDI project, I pushed the headlights forward about an inch to bring them flush with the leading edge of the hood, rather than being recessed under it. I also took some Lexan and installed it around the lower front fascia to fill in the grille area (which is huge) and the little air scoops on either side. I already have a chin spoiler under the car to duct air up into the intercooler and radiator, so cooling shouldn't pose a problem.

I just did this last night, so I haven't tested the results yet, but I'm looking foward to seeing what kind of results I get from this.

I would really like to test out a full body belly pan on my 96 mustang...It has no belly pan at all under there so I figure it may be worth an mpg or two

Not sure if it did much yet for mpg, but I installed some CF F1 style side mirrors on my '92 Vx. At 1rst it didn't look like it would mount up properly, but my buddy sanded down the 3 mounting surfaces with a belt sander & a lil drilling to make the inside bolts work. Less drag but looks better than the oem side-mirrors which were all scratched up on the glass & vibrating too much(hella annoying). I'll post up pics tomorrow. Cost was a lil high $200? and took a month for manufacturer to make & ship

A 10% weight reduction yields slightly better than 2% mpg increase at 70-mph.
Most automakers have plucked the weight reduction low-hanging fruit.
To properly do fiberglass,you're looking at a full-scale 'male' plug,from which the 'female' mold can be made,in which the actual part is layed-up.
It's a great deal of work and expensive if your time is worth anything to you.

...assuming a "midsize sedan" weight class of roughly 3,000 lbs, GM put forth this 'inverse" relationship back in 1999:

(W1 / W2)^(0.72) = (mpg2 / mpg1)

...where:

W1 = existing curb weight
W2 = new vehicle curb weight
mpg1 = existing fuel economy
mpg2 = new vehicle fuel economy

...wonder *how* that 0.72 power coefficient varies as weight increases or decreases?
