My feeling is that cities should be more compact. I can generally tell the age of a community just by looking at

how wide the streets are
are there sidewalks
are there driveways or alleyways
how much room in between homes

My home was built around 1900. They didn't really build roads for high speed trips to wal-mart back then they built the streets so you could walk to the neighborhood market.

I just helped my long time car free friend buy a car.

Hes getting serious with his girl and she would like a car.

I know hes going to cook this one too and be without a car again soon.

I lived in asia without a car or scooter. So many buses and trucks with long bench seats in the back. Gas was really cheap but no one could afford it or cars so they took public transport.

Only a few of the people who could have a car, actually choose not too, most want one.

I think 95% or more of people would like to have a car, but many are unable either financially or managing the vehicle ownership and reliability or ability to drive.

Now I dont feel so bad owning a dozen gas powered vehicles (not including chainsaws or outboards).

I enjoy writing here, comments about articles, sometimes "how I did it" or "how to mess it up from an expert". I do not come up with timely subjects in a certain time; just mainly off-the-cuff replies, but I would be terrible figuring out specific articles.

Pittsburgh is starting car-free fridays tomorrow (err today, its 12:30am).

Bike Pittsburgh » Car Free Fridays

Basically it encourages everyone to bike or take transit to work. Plus you get a free breakfast and discounts at shops for the day . They also set up a bike pool to help inexperienced commuters buddy up with someone more seasoned.
