looking into getting a fuel sipper.

Got a new job that will require me to drive alot. After I save up a little money I'd like to buy a used car to save on fuel. I'd really like to find something like a diesel vw rabbit to maybe run on veggie. But, ultimately I'd settle for something that's cheap and good looking, sorry metro guys. So anyways, what kind of cool little cars are out there?

Will

Being a shameless Saturn S-Series snob, I tried to find cheap saturns SC# with a manual tranny near Houma, but I only found 2 within 100 miles, and they're $6K each !!!!

Hmmm, A little too swooshy for my taste. I'm into older boxier stuff, probably doesn't make any sense for economy. I'd really like a diesel to play around with veggie. Which older cars besides vw's and Mercedes came with diesels?

That's a good question. I can't think of any off-hand. If you were in Europe, however, you'd have the pick of the lot!

Also open to a small diesel pick-up. Would love to be able to drive a truck and get awesome mileage.

I think this to now and again. with alot of time to fix oem errors, the smallest of subes (not the justy) has been a blessing in disguise. the highway is home for the 3 main and normal sized tread..inn fact, it is outright amazing to speak of facts after 500 miles of action.

the diesels today can be hacked into strong enough with turbos galore at a popular auction site.even the old rabbits that tortured with top speeds of 12 mph.

If I have a chance, it may be a future project..

but I am v8 at heart, and know from my own past, there is plenty smart enough. (a p71 cop car comes to mind for newer chance to make a sipper)

other than that. avoiding transverse and inline fours is my uniqueness. some get by with it.. I do not. it is never fun. hope my 2 cents helps.

Rabbit pickups are prone to lots of rust + frame rust so close inspection is a must. Ford brought the Mazda 2.0 RF diesel into 84-87 Escorts which are cool little cars but also prone to rear strut mount rust. Peugeot sold diesels in the 80s here which have their followers, and there are a few BMW turbodiesels (85-86) as well that are nice rides. My warning is that the rarer the car, the more difficult it is to find the parts--even oil and fuel filters can become obsolete. Good luck with the search!

If you want cool (to my taste, anyway), the Honda CRX and Del Sol are the only ones I know of that'll meet all three of cheap, good, and cool.
