The low end of CdA -- Wow, I want one
Check out these velomobiles. Many aerodynamic features that have been discussed one way or another in this forum. There are three- and four-wheel models, from several manufacturers. Here are some videos:

And in Alaska they'd keep you nice and warm.
Maybe not so practical in other places. |
These are cropping up everywhere from Texas to Vermont. Sailplane ventilation systems and solar blocking coatings can be used as needed. Many are based on designs from Holland and can use electric motors depending on state laws. Prices vary with materials and options. Buy a trike and make your own Corovelo.

Just built one of my own. With the very large electric motor I put in it, it's faster off-the-line than most sports bikes.
Features a boat tail, smooth wheel covers, air deflectors, a belly pan, max sidewall tires, economy instrumentation, and electric assist (1kwh battery). The trike I picked up on Craigslist for $600. I probably have a similar amount into the electronics - I could've set it up for as little as $250 or so, but it would top out at 19mph rather than 51mph. The body is coroplast, zip ties, duct tape, plus some pipe hangars, threaded rods, bolts, and aluminum L. EDIT: It also has a "trunk" which I can stand in, and can take probably 2-3 large bags of grocers. EDIT2: I currently have parts on order to add turn signals, brake, and running lights to it. https://i.imgur.com/X71rOjv.jpg https://i.imgur.com/by7Slf9.jpg https://i.imgur.com/ty9Rld2.jpg https://i.imgur.com/bzCOnsR.jpg https://i.imgur.com/HcHAn7n.jpg https://i.imgur.com/W5TYQaW.jpg |
Yaarr! It be needin' a pirate ship vinyl wrap.
I'm hoping to build an aero-trike, but I will start with this base: http://ecomodder.com/forum/member-fr...1-100-1207.jpg For the rollcage, ingress/egress and 328MPGe. ..and to take it to the Bonneville Flat Flats. |
It would be great to have their uber aerodynamics, along with electric assist (for climbing hills, etc. and for folks not in their prime), and with easier entry and exit (for folks not in their prime).

The plan is to take the [F]un[U]tility[V]ehicle (not pictured) to America's Playground.

Search 'corovelo' on Google image. A VW type I is a high drag shape.

No kidding. But the picture is of America's Playground. Even though the light appears normal, when I got there the first time, I was snow-blind within 10-15 minutes. I had to wear two pair of sunglasses.
Coincidentally, that Superbeetle is the one I will need to sell to get an FUV. NADA mid-book is up $800 since that picture was taken. Actually the Type I has a bluff nose and some pretty aggressive plan taper. A full boat tail requires only an additional three feet of length. The FUV is a tandem two-seater and would only need an added two feet. |
