Make a throttle detent spring...save some gas....

I FINALLY got permission from the IGC to reveal to the human race some of our more advanced technology. But REMEMBER....this is only a test to see if humans are able to utilize these higher levels of thought application. Pass this test and who knows how far humanity can advance.

This is applied to my 4x4 wagon...which is actually an advanced transportation device that has been disguised for use on the planet Earth.

........

How to do it:

* will likely need to remove the air cleaner in order to drill a hole for the spring in the edge of the heat stove

* the spring is probably from an old screen door (wooden type)...this seems to have about the right "pull". You should use around a 5" length of spring. Will probably need to make a loop for one end after cutting it to length.

* The bottom end of the spring needs to be "crimped" to stay on the heat shield...since there has to be some slack in the linkage in order for it to work

* I use heavy copper wire to make the link at top...easier to adjust the length...but strong enough to hold it's shape

So what does it do? Just gives your lead foot a reminder of where the best throttle position might be for the best mpg...but can be over ridden at any time if needed. Seems to me that I have around 75-85% full power at maybe 1/4th or less throttle....keeps you out of the secondary?

You need to adjust it to your preferences...for a 1.5L probably somewhere past the throttle position needed to maintain 55 mph...for a V6 or V8...just about at that point.

Works much like a vacuum gauge...you just don't need to watch it all the time.

This could be set up on any engine that isn't fly by wire...just need to find room for the spring and find a place on the engine to tie the end down. You do probably need the spring to be around 5" or longer so the tension doesn't increase too much at WOT.

*Need to be sure you will have no interference with throttle operation...install at your own risk.

as a maverick from the IGC, i also have superior intellect.
but maybe i need another angle of this photo that may be a little further away.
is that convenient?
?

The concept is simple...just a spring put on the throttle linkage with some adjustable slack so the extra resistance doesn't occur until you have some throttle movement. This is specific to a Tercel 3AC manual....no way to get another pic due to limited access...would look just the same.

In the pic the throttle linkage moves UP as it opens...the "ball" thingie is on the throttle shaft.

The idea works on any engine with a throttle linkage. The old screen door springs are about the right "pull"...can't be too strong or too weak...around a 5" length to allow needed movement. I also had this on a Nissan V6 auto...worked real well.

simply amazing how you advanced cultures for distant planets are able to use RUST so seccessfully in deguising stufff.

lol

Fly-by-wire models need to put the spring on the pedal assembly, not on the throttle assembly.

We have many other cloaking devices...being friendly with the Romulans.

My IGC provided 4x4 wagon only APPEARS to be a cheap POS...do not let appearances deceive you.

Alright....now your scaring me......

Update..................

Installed a spring on my pickup...put this one on the throttle rod above the pedal...with the spring anchored on a steel dash brace up under the dash. Made a "loop" to attach the spring at the pedal rod...using a small hose clap to hold it on.

Both vehicles (1.5 L and 2.4L-4x4s) are set to engage at around the same throttle position as at 55 mph in 5th gear.

With both I intend to shift at around 2.5K which is where both run in 5th at 55 mph...seems the combo is power enough to get down the road OK.

Expect both to save around 2-3 mpg vs more typical driving.

Probably a good idea to use a very small turnbuckle to adjust these...since the "slop" is only a fraction of an inch.

Specs for the truck:

vac at idle = 21 HG

vac at 55 mph in 5th = 10 to 14 HG....O2 cycles at this vac level...not if it goes below this though.

couldn't you just, umm... like, I mean, put a small doggy chew toy under the... ummm... tall skinny pedal? That way it would squeak when you went too fast, also.

You couldn't put 100% throttle if you needed to.
